Cancun Day 6 - Thursday 09 FEB 2023

The day started off as usual.  Up before 8 am.  Down to the pool, reserved by Lorra at 8:15.  We had seats, but two ladies from New Jersey sat between us.  No worries, we sit in the pool more than anything.  We laid around until Maria, our pool waitress, came by to give us our appetizers (aka drinks).  She also told us that there would be a taco bar at our pool today.  We stayed around for lunch.  It hit 82 F (28 C) but the wind was not near as windy.  It was a beautiful day in paradise.

Todd and Lesley got up and left by 7 am today.  They were on a SCUBA diving trip to the Mexican underwater museum.  They returned around 1 and went for lunch.  They had a great time but were also on the tired side (as proved by Lesley passing out before 9 tonight).

Funny story - and true story - only Lorra has read the post from yesterday about the birds.  No one else down there had read about my adventure.  So, as I was taking my third nap by the pool this afternoon, Adam took some sunscreen and put it on my forehead - hoping that I would think yet another bird pooped on me.  Didn’t happen.

We decided we would all go down to the ocean and take photos.  And not to bum anyone out, but on our way down to the beach, we had to stop to let the lifeguards, medical personnel, and bystanders haul an unconscious man up the steps to the first floor.  Alex and I walked around, but the rest of the gang stopped a flight of stairs up.  The AED was out and CPR was being administered.  We overheard someone state Heart Attack, but Lorra said he had water in him.  We later found out from witnesses on the beach that he was out in the ocean, got to a place where he could not get out of the ocean, and the lifeguards threw him a buoy.  He grabbed it but could not hold on and went under.  He was then rescued but was not conscious.  He could have panicked and had a heart attack, but he was certainly waterlogged.  No one was in the ocean by the time we arrived on the beach as they were all in shock.  The ambulance arrived quickly and everyone had nothing but praise for the staff - lifeguards, military (beach security), hotel staff, etc.  They provided all the help they could and got him quickly to a medical facility.  We hope he’s doing well.  Yet again, a first for us in Cancun.

We took photos and entered the ocean.  It was very difficult to get out - you had to work at it.  The lifeguards ensured we stayed toward the south side of the beach.  We found it rough but not anything we could not overcome.

Back to the private pool for the afternoon before going back for showers by 4:30.  Lorra, Adam, Kathy and Alex did the tequila taste-testing at the Sports Bar.  Then everyone but Sandy and I had dinner plans at the Hibachi grill.  They have a very long and interesting story about they folks that joined them for dinner at the grill.  Sandy and I went to La Isla mall to buy vanilla for folks back in Indiana and t-shirts for the grandkids.  We returned to have steaks at the Sports Bar and watch Purdue defeat Iowa in men’s basketball.

Most of us then went across the hall to the Member’s Only Lounge and had a few nightcaps.  Back to the room by 9.

Fireworks have been going off every night for about 5 minutes, but the timing when they start is a guess.  9:30 the first night.  9:45 the next.  10 after that.  And tonight it was 9:05.  Sandy ran out and caught a few of them.  They are included in the photos below.  Nice free show!

Adam putting “bird poop” on my head.
My kids, being smart did not participate in this frivolity.  Wisely so.
But they also did not tell me I had a blob of sunscreen on my head.  Fail.

That’s the kiddie pool bucket-o-water in the background.
It dumps probably 50 gallons of water about every 2 minutes or so.

Kathy, Nick, and Lorra.  This picture was taken to send back to their coworkers.  Cheers!

The beach today.  You can see all the white water.  Rough / strong rip going on.

Sandy caught these fireworks tonight - from the 12th floor.
