Cancun Day 4 - Tuesday Mar 12

 The kids got up “early” and were on a shuttle to Xcaret by 8:20.  It’s less than 30 mins down the road and is a nature park with lots to do.  They chose to swim with the dolphins, visit the sharks, and feed the butterflies.  They did not return until after 2 pm.  Hadley went down for a 4 hour nap.  The others joined us at the pool.

While they were out and about, Sandy and I took the time to teach Austin and Andy how to play cornhole.  We stayed pretty close.  I think it ended up in a tie when we quit so we could go cool off in the pool.  If anyone won, it was not by more than one game.

Dinner was steak and lobster at the buffet and we ate a lot, probably too much.  Then everyone came back to our room.  The adults played an adult drawing game while the kids played their own games in their own room.  Only one kid ended up crying, which is a win in our book.  Shelby would like it to be known that regardless of how we broke up the teams for drawing, her team always won.

Then we played Euchre.  Sandy & Alex beat Andy & Austin 3-0.  Nick & I beat Kathy & Shelby 5-1.  Then our kids left for their own room and the grandkids all stayed in Grandma & Papaw’s room.

We woke up about 3:45 with a nightmare.  Said he was scared.  But he returned to bed and was asleep again before Sandy could pull up his covers.  It was sweet of Will though, before Grandma could make it to their bedroom, he was up and had his arm around Wes.  The two girls?  They were giggling, saying they could not go to sleep because their farts were too loud.  That’s a true story.  

Weather has been awesome.  Getting plenty of sun, probably too much at times.  Enjoying ourselves.

    I can sympathize with Kathy and Shelby ... I have also suffered defeat playing Euchre against Craig and Nick ... they can be brutal!

Cancun Day 2 - Sunday, March 10

 Will and Alex joined me and Grandma Sandy for breakfast.  The fruit smoothies were the biggest hit.  The rest of the crew slept in and joined us at the pool later.  Those grandkids are little fish.  We had to force them to take breaks.  They would still be there if we let them! We had lunch by the pool and then made the kids relax for about an hour before hitting the kiddie pool - with slides.  We hit the beach, swam in the ocean a bit and then built sand castles.  We returned to the pool for the entire afternoon. We ate dinner as a group of 12 at the buffet here in the resort.  Hadley fell asleep at the table and Will just barely made it through his ice cream before they all headed off to bed.  They were out by 7:30 pm.  The grandkids were exhausted but having a great time down here. It was hot today, 90 F with little to no breeze at all.  There was a heat index warning as the humidity was up, making it feel a lot hotter.  No complaints though as the pool feels great! Retirement Party Cancun 2024 - Day 1

 Sandy and I are both now officially retired as I hung it up Saturday, 09 MAR - which happened to coincide with us traveling to Cancun for a party with the family.  It was a real short night though as we started our drive to Indy at 3:30am.  The airport was busy, but not packed.  We waited in line to check-in but breezed thru Security.  We were delayed leaving the tarmac but only arrived in Mexico 20 mins behind our original arrival time. It seems that we got lucky as flights were getting delayed or canceled all around us.  Upon arrival in Mexico, we never even stopped in line thru Immigration as there were that many agents open and no one there checking in.  It was awesome.  Luggage took a while as you could imagine, but we made it onto the bus at 11:30.  The drive to Playa del Carmen took about an hour, then check in, then walk down to lunch.  It was 1:30 pm before we were getting food. Cancun Day 3 - Monday March 11

 We got a text that Will was “starving” at 7:55.  We understood - well, we laughed first.  He slept for 11 hours and it was time to eat.  We agreed to meet for breakfast at 8:15.  Alex, Will, Mallory, and Shelby met me and grandma at the buffet.  What about everyone else?  Kathy and Hadley showed up at the pool about 10.  Nick and Wes sometime around 11.  And we did not see Andy and Austin until after lunch.  And that’s exactly how vacations are supposed to work.  Sleep when you’re tired, eat when you’re hungry, and do it all over again for a week! So today, when the kids decided to build sand castles on the beach, we walked to the other side of the resort - where we found, yes sand, but also fewer rocks and tree stumps in the water.  All but the youngest grandchild went into the ocean again.  Then we collectively built Hadrian’s Wall to protect the castle  before erecting the towers.  This took long enough on all fours that we could feel the sun working too much on our backs.  We call
