Cancun 2022 - Day 9 - Sunday March 13

Image
I got up this morning at 7:05 am - at least I thought it was.  Turns out our damn alarm clock in the room updated to DST.  It was actually 6:05, but I did not find this out until my bride came out at what I thought was 8:15.  I checked the internet.  It was 7:15 am.  The alarm clock changed, Sandy's phone changed, my laptop changed, and the microwave all changed times - and they should not have.  Cancun does not observe Daylight Savings Time.  Even though Indiana pushed all clocks ahead one hour, we did not.  You wanna know why?  Because the Sun doesn't care what time it is.  Time is a man-made construct to coordinate events. All that behind us, it was cooler and overcast - and as it turns out - all day.  The high today may have made 75 F (24 C) but it was really windy.  It felt cold.  We stayed indoors.  Sandy did another puzzle and then started a book.  I played games on the computer and took a nap.  And due to the aforementioned time change, we did not turn on the TV until

Last night, mistakes were made.  When I last signed off, we were heading down to the Sports Bar to watch Purdue win their basketball game.  The first sign - there were no tables.  No biggie, we thought as the other game was just ending.  We waited for a table and finally got one.  It was then that we realized it was also karaoke night.  No, I could not convince Sandy to get up on stage and sing with me! We made it only through the first half of the game.  It was too loud, crowded, and the annoying group in front of us was well into intoxication land.  We came back to our nice quiet room and watched the updates via the internet.  It was much more enjoyable. Today I rolled out at 8:30.  My bride was on the patio eating her breakfast.  We loaded up on sunscreen and then headed for the sundeck.  It was a perfect morning, maybe a bit on the hot side as the wind has greatly subsided.  It was supposed to be raining, but we had full sun.  It was so warm that I cooled off in the pool three tim

Same old thing - different day.  Up by 7:30.  On the sundeck by 9:30.  Lunch at poolside bar.  Back to room at 5.  Showers.  However, when I awoke and fired up this here laptop, the little icon at the bottom that shows home temperature and weather had a little SNOW icon on it.  We can complain all we wish, it ain't snowing in Cancun! This evening, we walked down to one of our favorite restaurants, La Distilleria, only to find it CLOSED.  According to the guy out front, the owners closed it and are opening a new joint.  The closure happened over a year ago.  I guess that tells you how long it has been since we were in Cancun proper.  Instead we walked down to Puerto Modero, a steak and seafood joint.  We had excellent steaks. Back to the room to await the start of the Purdue men's basketball game.  It's BigTen tournament time and we will have to go down to the sports bar to watch the game.  I do have my PU shirt on to represent!  Andy, Austin, and Bill got tickets to both o

I was up before 7.  I waited for my bride and then we went down for the buffet breakfast.  We have found the bacon to be excellent - for the record.  After breakfast we put on our sunscreen and hit the sundeck by 9:45 am - where we stayed until a late lunch at the pool.  Back to the sundeck by 2.  Stayed there until after 5, actually almost 6. Back to the room for showers and then we watched some of the men's college basketball games and the Players golf tournament at TPC Sawgrass.  We went down for a buffet dinner at 8.  Late for us, but trendy if you're rich we guessed.  Back to the room for today's selfie and an update to this blog (mainly for Mom - yes, I know you're reading this Barb).  That ends the day today...but, a few funny stories... Somehow my bride forgot to put sunscreen on her nostrils and burnt the underside of her nose.  Her text to Lesley said her nostrils were "singed."  Not to be outdone, my sunglasses reflected enough light to burn my nos

We shut down last night at 10.  I finished the book I brought and Sandy is almost done with puzzle #1.  I was up before 7 having breakfast.  My bride joined me about 8:30 and we were on the sundeck by 9:15. Lunch was at the Char Hut.  Sandy had chicken nachos and I had the hamburgesa.  We reapplied the sunscreen and were back on the deck from 1 - 5.  To the room for showers and then off to the shuttle for dinner reservations at The Captain's Cove.  The menu has changed, so what we thought we were going to have there did not pan out for us. We started with appetizers and then Sandy had the shrimp spaghetti.  I had the fresh catch of the day, blackened.  We believe our waiter said it was snapper.  Both meals were excellent. We returned to the hotel bar where Sandy had a drink with alcohol - see her edited photo below.  We watched the end of the first Big Ten basketball game between Nebraska and Northwestern.  The bar TVs get the BigTen Network - our rooms do not.  Looks like we will

It's day 3 of our self-imposed quarantine.  It's a tough life here in the Caribbean.  The wind, while slowing, has thankfully continued to blow - keeping the felt temperature tolerable.  It hit 86 F (29.5 C) today.  But as we headed to the sundeck at 0900, the tropic rains hit.  30 mins later, it was full sun, beautiful skies, and awesome sundeck weather - which of course is where we went. I had attempted to call it a night last evening at 10 pm.  However, having forgotten to take out my contacts and a brief geography lesson on South America (long story, but Sandy thought that Rio was on the southern-most tip of SA.  I, in turn, said Brazil was only a quarter of SA.  Turns out we are both incorrect.  Brazil is 47.3% of SA.  I did know that Rio was about middle on E coast.  Good lessons.) it was 10:30 before I passed out.  I only got 1 nap in yesterday for Pete's sake!  I did stay in bed today until 8.  My bride beat me out of bed this morning - a first on this trip. We sta

We finally called it a night last evening at 10:30 pm.  I was up before 7 this morning, my bride rolled out in order to get us down on the sundeck by 0900.  We stayed until 11:30 and returned to change clothes so that we could sit through the time-share sales pitch.  We currently own 2 weeks (off-time) and are paid off.  They offered us an additional week of points.  In return, we get three free weeks of all-inclusive at the new Royal Uno on top of our now three weeks' of points.  Basically, this vacation pays for itself.  And if we so choose, we now have two full weeks (any time / any location) in Cancun. We returned to the sundeck and stayed until 5.  We showered and then went downstairs to eat Mexican Night at the buffet.  The Mariachi band showed up.  It was loud.  We returned to the room to watch some TV and catch up this blog. It got up to 85 F (29 C) today and the wind was less than yesterday - but thankfully still blew.  It would have been really caliente without the breez

I went to bed last night as soon as Duke and Coach K lost to the Tarheels.  It was 8:30 pm.  My bride came in an hour later and I only know that because she told me.  I was out.  I did get up at 6:50 this morning.  She rolled out at 8.  We were slathered and at the pool by 9 am.   It was breezy, but that's a good thing as it kept the felt temperatures to below the 86 F (30 C) actual air temperature.  We stayed there until Noon and walked over to the pool restaurant for lunch.  After eating we came back to the room for more sunscreen and then went back to the sundeck for naps #3 and 4 for me. The pool water felt cool, but I suspect that is because I was so warm on the sundeck.  The ocean was really rough (red flag) due to the current / undertow, but it felt warmer than the pool. Back to the room by 5 pm for showers.  Dinner was here at the condo restaurant at 6.  We both went for the buffet.  Back to the room by 7.   Today's batch of pictures below... A night shot of the pool a

It's Saturday, 05 MAR 2022 - our travel day down to Cancun, MX.  It also happens to be Pa Jerry's 82nd birthday.  Happy Birthday Dad!  We had him, Mom, and Pa Bill out for dinner last weekend as we knew we would be gone today to warmer climes.  Sandy made him a raspberry pie from what we picked off the farm.  A homemade pie with raspberries from the land we all grew up on.  Winning!  Still the favorite! Our flight to Cancun was direct from Indy at 11:15 am this morning.  Sure was nice not to have to get up at 0300 and drive in the dark for an hour.  We slept in until 7:00 and left at 7:45 for the airport.  We found the airport to be deserted.  There was hardly anyone there.  We breezed right through everything.  Our flight was full, but who cares?  We pulled out early and watched movies on the way down.  It passed the time quite quickly. But Lord have Mercy!  Upon arrival at Cancun, we could barely make it down the steps into Immigration because it was That Full!  Having been
